The Pete Incaviglia Rule
What is the Pete Incaviglia Rule?
In 1986 the Montreal Expos traded Pete Incaviglia immediately after drafting and signing him because he refused to play a single game in the Minors.
Incaviglia was traded to the Texas Rangers and went straight to the Majors.
Major League Baseball instituted a rule whereby a team cannot trade a drafted player until he has been under contract with the team for at least one year. This was known as the Pete Incaviglia Rule.
The rule was changed in 2015 allowing teams to trade drafted players the day after the World Series.
