1989 Oakland Athletics Opening Day Starters

The 1989 World Series Champion Oakland A’s started their season at home with a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners in front of a sellout crowd of 46,163.


Dave Stewart was the starting pitcher that night, going 5.1 innings for the win.  As usual, the "Eck" closed the game.


"Bash Brother" Mark McGwire hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 3rd off Mariners "ace" Mark Langston.  


Jose Canseco, the other "Bash Brother" started the season on the IR with a wrist injury.  Therefore, he missed 95 games in 1989.


Rickey Henderson started the season with the Yankees before getting traded to the A's on June 21, 1989 for Greg Cadaret, Eric Plunk and Luis Polonia.
